 Second Life is a virtual world, not a game.  Visitors can access Second Life for free.  Buying land will require a credit card for purchase.  Many universities are developing campuses in Second Life.  NASA and NOAA both have good sites for education.  Info Island is a collection of libraries, complete with reference librarians who will answer your questions.
